So, 2018 will see me collaborating with Robert on a feature-length, chronological documentary of The Cure’s history from the 1970s via present day to the future. Robert himself will tell the story and this will work alongside other events for the band’s 40-year celebration.
The film to which I will bring my own style of jiggery-pokery will use as well as 'old favourites' a cornucopia of material from Robert’s collection which has never been seen before: Super-8; interviews; bootlegs; rare performances; behind-the-scenes, blah. Updates ’as and when’.
Um die Wartezeit auf Neuigkeiten zu überbrücken mal ein kurzer Blick auf zwei hörenswerte Nebenprojekte von langjährigen Bandmitgliedern aus den 80ern und 90ern, in die ich erst zuletzt mal richtig reingehört habe:
Fools Dance Fools Dance were a short-lived English rock band formed in 1983. Initially calling themselves The Cry, this band featured former Cure members Simon Gallup and Matthieu Hartley and played their first gig at the Covent Garden Rock Garden on 19 April 1983.The group changed their name to Fools Dance later that year after some lineup changes. Although Fools Dance recorded a number of songs and played several gigs in their brief existence, they never released a full-length album. The only material they ever issued were two EPs: Fools Dance and They'll Never Know.

Goth-rock duo MGT has teamed up with former/founding members of The Cure, Lol Tolhurst and Pearl Thompson, for a remix, standalone single, dubbed “The Assembly Line (Cured Mix).”

Die Gerüchteküche verkündet, dass zum Record Store Day die Mixed Up Compilation (1990) wiederaufgelegt wird und sogar ein Nachfolger in den Startlöchern steht, wobei nicht Remixer, sondern die Lieblingsbands der Band (also von Robert Smith) für die Mixe verantwortlich zeichnen. Hoffentlich wird das nicht so eine Vinyl-only Sache, aber zu befürchten ist es.

Die Sache wird offizieller und konkreter, allerdings hat Robert Smith (und nicht befreundete Bands) die 16 Songs selbst geremixt, das macht die Sache nicht weniger spannend für mich. Vorfreude 9/10 (die Höchstwertung bleibt für ein neues Album reserviert).
Hab neulich wieder mal die Greatest Hits gehört und mich daran erinnert, dass mir anno 1984/85 ein paar Schüler Cure-Platten geliehen haben. Japanese Whisper fand ich damals ganz gut. Ob mir das heute noch gefallen würde weiß ich aber nicht.
Sehr schön, Mister. Da 3 der 8 Songs von Japanese Whispers auf der Greatest Hits sind, war der Einstieg ja nun da. Die anderen 5 befinden sich auf der B-Seiten Compilation Join the dots, Japanese Whispers wird deshalb nicht mehr vom Label aufgelegt.
das finde ich übrigens sehr schade, weil dadurch keine deluxe-edition von dieser compi herauskam. viele cure-fans hassen japanese whispers. ich aber nicht!

Ich finde es auch toll. Aber für eine Deluxe-Edition hat wohl auch einfach das Material gefehlt. Man ging ja nur (als Duo) ins Studio um besagte 3 Singles aufzunehmen, da blieben wohl keine Outtakes über. Wobei, man hätte ja die sehr raren 12'' Versionen von "Let's go to bed", "Just one kiss" und "The Lovecats" sowie eines dieser wunderlichen 1983er Konzerte als Bonus ranhängen können.
