Summer 1969. While George Martin was recording the string arrangements for the »Abbey Road« album in London, the Beatles flew to Los Angeles. Graham Nash had told them about the forthcoming »Three Days Of Peace & Music« festival that was to be held in upstate New York. During the recording of their supposedly ‘final album’ they had discussed vague plans to promote it (or not promote it at all…). Nash’s enthusiasm convinced them to try (after the rooftop gig in January) another return to the concert stage.
Two days of rehearsals at Nash’s house in Laurel Canyon didn’t bode well – at one point Stephen Stills had to show Lennon the chords to ‘Rain’ – but when news of the size of the festival showed up on radio and TV, everyone was convinced they couldn’t miss this. They also rehearsed a few back-up musicians in case John got cold feet at the last minute.
Although a contract had been signed the week before, the promoters weren’t allowed to mention or allude to the Beatles; instead a slot for »Crosby, Stills & Nash« (whoever that would be) was scheduled for the last day.
Paul McCartney and George Harrison arrived at the site of the festival on Sunday afternoon (and witnessed Joe Cocker’s interpretation of ‘A Little Help From My Friends’). They hung out with The Band until John and Ringo arrived in the evening. When Paul realized that they were scheduled to appear after Blood, Sweat & Tears, he talked to their horn section and had an idea for the perfect opening number. John went along – »I was happy I didn’t have to do anything on the first song!«.
So, finally, Wavy Gravy’s announcement of »Ladies and gentlemen, four boys from England…« was cut short by the Motown-style intro of ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’, played by the Blood, Sweat & Tears horns, with The Beatles on a concert stage again after three years: Paul with his Hofner ‘violin’ bass, John (dressed in white) standing behind an electric piano, George in T-shirt, jeans and Fedora, and Ringo bashing away in the background.
The song had barely ended, as John leaned forward to the microphone to snarl the classic »hello people… believe me, we’re scared shitless.« Ringo told reporters afterwards, »It was night when our helicopter arrived. It was pitch black, you couldn’t see anything. After the first song, we still weren’t sure if there was anybody there. It was quiet, and it was getting late, and everybody’d had a long day. When John made the first announcement, somebody, from way out there, yelled, ‘We’re with you!’ Okay, well, that’s the lad the concert’s for.«

Wie viele originale Videoclips haben die Beatles denn gemacht? Mir fällt nur "All you need is love" ein. Und dafür braucht man heutzutage zwei Blu-Rays? Und wie hat man sich Surround-Sound bei einer vierköpfigen Band vorzustellen? Bass von hinten rechts, Rhythmusgitarre von hinten links, Leadgitarre von vorne links und Drums von vorne rechts?

das wort "surround-sound" zaubert mir ein breitbandiges stirnrunzeln auf den schädel. ich hatte ja seinerzeit schon mit den cd-ausgaben gefremdelt; erst das letzte remaster hat für mich die wunderbare kompaktheit des sounds meiner (mich stark geprägt habenden) alten platten mit dem digitalen trägermdium verheiraten können, zuvor fiel mir das alles zu sehr auseinander. wenn das jetzt noch surround gemischt sein soll, dann gute nacht! ich höre schon das skelett von bob clearmountain um die ecke rasseln.
Auf http://www.thebeatles.com/sites/one/index.html ist unter "About" die Tracklist mit Detailinformationen: Auf DVD1 sind 27 Videos, auf DVD2 (die wohl nur gemeinsam mit der CD, die kein Mensch braucht, erhältlich ist) 23. Die wenigsten sind aber Original-Videoclips, viele sind neu erstellt, manche sind TV-Auftritte und Ausschnitte aus den Kinofilmen. Manches klingt sehenswert, aber kaufen werde ich das Dings höchstens, wenn ich es mal als Sonderangebot sehe. Recht viel mehr als einmal schaut man sich sowas doch eh nicht an.

"All You Need Is Love" als "Video" war der Mitschnitt einer weltweiten Fernsehshow, wo die Beatles live (zum Backingtrack von der Single) singen. Aber seit 1965 hatten sie zu ihren Singles (später auch zu den B-Seiten) spezielle Filme aufgenommen, die von den Fernsehstationen gesendet wurden – es war einfach zeitlich nicht möglich, immer bei allen "Top Of The Pops"-Folgen (und den entsprechenden Sendungen in Amerika und Europa) persönlich aufzutreten. Der Clip zu "Strawberry Fields Forever" war sozusagen eine Vorstudie zu "Magical Mystery Tour".
Was die kommenden "Surround-Mixe" angeht – das werden wohl kaum kinomäßige Mixe mit dreidimensionaler Raumaufteilung sein. Eher Steven Wilson-ähnliche Mixe, in denen die einzelnen Spuren mehr getrennt/separiert sind als bei den 2009er Original-Remastern (wo man auf sowas ja ausdrücklich verzichtet hat). Beim "Yellow Submarine Soundtrack" war das ja auch schon gemacht worden (mit grandiosem Resultat); ebenso bei den Tonspuren der "Anthology"-DVDs – man muß sich da nur mal "Paperback Writer" anhören: plötzlich kann man genau hören daß da drei verschiedene Stimmen im Chor singen (ohne daß der Song anders oder irgendwie "remixt" klingt!).

Wieder gehört: zwei der besten Platten aller Zeiten: A Hard Days Night und Revolver. Fühle, dass Lennons/McCartneys Songs, so unerreicht ihre Schönheit auch ist, mehr gefallen als erschüttern, dass ihnen die innere Erregung abgeht. Ob das nun richtig ist oder nicht.
"A Hard Days Night" steht bei mir etwas weiter hinten an. Wenn ich mich recht erinnere, ist es die einzige Platte der Beatles, auf der ausschließlich Lennon/McCartney Songs sind.
auch bei mir kein kandidat für die vorderen plätze (auch wenn mit "I should have known better" und "things we said today" zwei meiner muttermilchsongs drauf sind). "revolver" hingegen muss ja im guten so wenig diskutiert werden wie der söder im blöden.
